Photojournalist Gaby Velasquez presents her top 2025 images, showcasing sports as fine art through motion, emotion and the energy of athletic performance.
My top photos of 2025 work together as a collection that showcases my love for capturing moments in sports and presents them as fine art.
In these moments during my assignments, I’ve set myself free to express creatively through motion, returning to the feeling I had at UTEP working at the student newspaper, the Prospector, stepping into my fine arts classes by day and photographing UTEP sports by night.
Each moment, whether it’s the sweep of a horse running at full force, the explosive flip of a cheerleader’s hair as she dances, the arc of a Luchador's leap and the shadow that follows, a swimmer breaking through a pocket of light or the instant a punch sends sweat flying, is a study in movement.
I took control in these instances.
Instead of waiting for “what might happen,” I read what was ahead, positioned myself, followed the action through my viewfinder, and waited for the exact second, muting out, though not completely, the ringing in my ears and the roar of the crowd that I can still hear when I look at these images.
These moments let me combine two parts of myself: Capturing athletes not just as action, but as emotion and energy. Art in motion, shaped by light and speed, is the second part.
