Martin Maldonado, a catcher for 15 years in Major League Baseball, will join the Braves as Special Assistant for Major League Operations. This front office role helps teams with team strategy and acts as an “ear to the ground” for front offices in the clubhouse. It’s typically a first step toward a on-field coaching role of manager position.
Maldonado as a player, was a defense-first (well only defense maybe) and racked up 11.1 WAR despite a career 69 wRC+ over 4000 plate appearances. Basically, he was a much better player than Bobby Cox, but also probably understands a thing or two about player development. At this time, Tyler Flowers who spent five seasons with the Braves as a catcher pretty recently, is in this role. So it’s not known if they will share the role or if Tyler is getting a bump up the chain or if he will be managing in the minor league or what. Stay tuned as we’ll be sure to have more.
