BERWICK, COLUMBIA COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) — Golfers are back on the fairway after a summer storm dealt a setback to a local golf course. The flood damage happened last week in Columbia County.
After last week’s torrential rains, members of Berwick Golf Club seemed unfazed by Sunday’s quick storm.
Golfers drove their carts through puddles at Berwick Golf Club and simply kept going.
The brief downpour was nothing compared to what the course faced last Monday.
Torrential downpours flooded the fairways with more than five inches of rain and shut down the greens for two days.
“It washed out one of the bridges on hole fifteen and then took out about half of the other bridge, which they were able to repair. So, the course was closed on Monday and Tuesday, and they were able to open the front nine Wednesday,” Berwick Golf Club Member Darren Rider told 28/22 News.
This is not the first time the club has had to deal with storm damage. Just last summer, a storm like no other devastated the course.
“You could not see any of this out here. It was raining extremely hard, everything flooded. When the rain stopped, we realized most of the trees were down. I think we’ve taken down 300 trees since the storm,” Rider added.
At the time, the golf club’s president said the aftermath was unbelievable.
“There was over a hundred trees covering tees, greens. There’s trees down everywhere, it’s by far the worst we’ve ever seen it,” Berwick Golf Club President Tom Cicini said.
Some Berwick Bulldogs football players helped clean up the mess the storm left behind. There were other helping hands, too.
“It was actually a pretty cool thing though, a lot of the membership came out and helped clean up everything, and a lot of people got closer together because of that,” Rider continued.
Thankfully, no cleanup this time. Just tee time at this popular golf course.
Even though Berwick Golf Club was closed for a couple of days, the clubhouse was able to remain open the entire time.
