The Wapsie Valley softball team punched their ticket to state with a convincing win in a regional final.
The last time Wapsie Valley High School qualified for state softball, no player on the active roster was even alive. In fact, there are probably several parents of the players who were yet to be born.
But this summer, the Warriors are headed to Rogers Park in Fort Dodge, as they secured a spot in the Class 1A field with a 14-2 victory over Don Bosco Monday night.

Wapsie Valley will head to the elite eight with a 29-4 record and No. 3 ranking, as they are at state for the first time since the 1977 season. The Warriors have been solid the last three years, winning 23 games last season and 22 in 2023.

But they were finally able to punch that final ticket this season.
Joining Wapsie Valley in the 1A field next week will be Wayne, Highland, Riverside, Newell-Fonda, Clarksville, Mason City Newman and St. Edmond, who they will square off with in the quarterfinals.
The 2A field was also placed as defending champion Van Meter is joined by East Marshall, Durant, West Fork, Louisa-Muscatine, West Monona, West Lyon and Cascade.
Iowa is the only state that plays summer softball and baseball. The fields for the remaining three classes will be determined on Tuesday night.
