MLB insider proposes Yankees-Diamondbacks blockbuster involving 31-HR All-Star

Should the New York Yankees make a bold trade with the Arizona Diamondbacks?

For the New York Yankees, it's nearly crunch time.

Following a disappointing end to the first half of the season, the Yankees are locked in a tight division race amid an American League playoff picture that's looking better by the day. The Toronto Blue Jays have surged out in front of the Yanks while the Boston Red Sox are nipping at their heels.

Third base has become the most glaring weakness for New York, and starting pitching is on the list now too after Clarke Schmidt's season-ending injury. Addressing both needs should be a top priority within the next two weeks.

Could the Yankees grab a third baseman and a starter in the same trade? One Major League Baseball insider thinks so.

On Sunday, Jon Heyman of the New York Post pitched a trade in which New York would land 3B Eugenio Suárez and SP Zac Gallen from the Arizona Diamondbacks in exchange for pitching prospects Cam Schlittler, Cade Smith, and Brock Selvidge.

“'It feels like the Yankees will do something big,' one rival exec said. To fill all three needs at once is tough, but wouldn’t a trade with the Diamondbacks for two rental players work beautifully?" Heyman wrote.

"The issue, of course, is that the D’Backs still want to buy, not sell, as GM Mike Hazen told us on 'The Show.' Suárez should be the Yankees’ top 3B target as a righty bat with big power (31 homers)."

Suárez and Gallen are both pure rentals, so the Yankees would expect this move to hurt their future outlook in exchange for a better shot at a long-awaited World Series title.

And while Suárez is having a great season and looks like the best third baseman (and possibly best overall hitter) available, Gallen has limped to a 5.40 ERA, a far cry from his third-place Cy Young finish in 2023.

Giving up three of best pitchers in the entire farm system is certainly an all-in move, and those are the kinds of moves the Yankees appear primed to make.
