A Rockies error allowed the winning run to score for Cincinnati in its 4-3 victory Saturday, July 12.
Cincinnati Reds manager Terry Francona said he wanted his team to "really push" through its weekend series against the Colorado Rockies. The Reds needed every ounce of push in Game Two of the three-game set, and they managed a stunning comeback.
Facing Rockies fireball-closer Victor Vodnik in the ninth inning and trailing, 3-2, Cincinnati's Will Benson tripled off the top of the wall in left-center field. He nearly walked the Rockies off, but at least he drove in Spencer Steer, who had led off the inning with a single, to tie the contest at Great American Ball Park.
Then, two batters later, Noelvi Marte slapped a grounder to second baseman Orlando Arcia, who bobbled the ball and allowed Benson to score on the error to give Cincinnati a 4-3 win Saturday, July 12, at Great American Ball Park before a crowd of 33,663.
Cincinnati (49-47) will look to take the series from the Rockies on Sunday, July 13.
The game started brightly for Cincinnati when Austin Hays drove in the opening run of the game on a sacrifice fly in the first inning for a 1-0 lead. Hays, who drew criticism Friday, July 11, for his 0-for-5 game against the Rockies, bounced back to his usual form less than 24 hours later as he went 2-for-4 with the RBI.
That was the Reds' only run until the seventh inning when Marte's solo homer to left, which was his second home run in as many games.
A night after Elly De La Cruz went 1-for-1 with four walks (three intentional), the Rockies pitched to him on Saturday and he went 2-for-4.
