The Boston Red Sox are named as a potential trade candidate for Minnesota Twins ace Joe Ryan at the MLB trade deadline.

At the 2025 MLB trade deadline, if the Boston Red Sox end up as buyers, they have one major need to address: the starting rotation. While there are many options, only a few stand out as great pickups at this year's deadline.
According to a new report from Jon Morosi for MLB Network, the Red Sox are one of many teams monitoring Minnesota Twins ace Joe Ryan. However, the Red Sox are the only team named by Morosi as a potential trade candidate.

The Twins' ace is in the middle of a strong season in his fifth year in the Major Leagues. Through 17 starts, Ryan has a 2.76 ERA, an 8-4 record, 3.9 WAR, and a career-high 152 ERA+ through the first half of the season.
Ryan also has an impressive 0.891 WHIP, 116 strikeouts, 21 walks, and an AL-leading 10 hit-by-pitches in 104.1 innings pitched. He's been pitching at his best this season, and the 29-year-old is now a name to watch at the trade deadline.
If the Red Sox are buyers, Ryan would be an incredible starter to pair with Garret Corchet atop the starting rotation. Not only would he help this season, but Ryan is also under team control through the 2027 season.
Any team trading for Ryan would have the next two and a half years with him under team control. Having an ace on a cheap deal, and under team control for a few years, is precisely the type of starter the Red Sox should go after.
Context on the Joe Ryan trade possibility, which we discussed today on @MLBNetwork:

For the Twins to move him, they will need to be (a) out of the AL postseason picture and (b) completely overwhelmed by an offer.
Difficult threshold to meet. Ryan set to be a FA after '27.
Landing Ryan won't be easy. In a follow-up report, Morosi explained that two criteria would need to be met before a potential deal for Ryan. The first is that the Twins must be out of the postseason picture.
The second, which is more impactful for the Red Sox, is that the Twins would need to be blown away by an offer. If the Twins are content with a deal that involves Jarren Duran, that could be a potential trade that could land Boston another ace to pair with Crochet.
Morosi's report is very encouraging for the Red Sox. Instead of selling off their top players, like they did with Rafael Devers, it seems like the Red Sox are looking to buy and target players who can make an impact for multiple years to come.
