The Detroit Tigers are looking to make back-to-back postseason trips, currently owning a 73–52 record and holding an 8.5-game lead over the second-place Cleveland Guardians.
Detroit has finally begun to pick it up again, winning four straight games and seven of their last ten. The Tigers struggled after the All-Star break, most notably at the top of their order with second baseman Gleyber Torres.
The 28-year-old veteran arrived in the offseason on a one-year, $15 million contract and earned his third All-Star selection—his first with Detroit—after an excellent first half that saw him bat .281 with an .812 OPS, nine home runs, and 45 RBIs.
In 107 at-bats since, Torres has posted a .206 batting average and .601 OPS with 23 strikeouts, a number that is already half the total he had in the first half of the season.
Gleyber Torres Benched for Series Finale
Ahead of the series finale against the Minnesota Twins, Tigers manager A.J. Hinch decided to leave Torres out of the lineup after going 0-for-5 with two strikeouts on Saturday.
Utility man Zack McKinstry made the move to second base and will bat seventh as the Tigers look for the sweep and a fifth straight win.

Torres Entering Critical Stretch Ahead of Free Agency
With Torres set to once again hit unrestricted free agency, the final stretch of the season will be crucial for him along with his ability to be a contributor down the stretch.
If Torres can return to his first-half form and play a role in Detroit’s upcoming postseason run, he will be set to earn a significant contract. If not, he may be forced to sign another short-term deal, as it will be unlikely a team would be willing to invest in a player with clear inconsistencies.
