The St. Louis Cardinals have been playing short-handed, missing All-Stars Nolan Arenado, Willson Contreras, and Brendan Donovan—all sidelined due to injury.
St. Louis still remains in the postseason hunt, however, despite their depth being tested. The team currently has a 61–62 record but has dropped three consecutive games.
The lineup clearly needs reinforcements, as the club has managed just 15 runs over their last six games, including a shutout at home to the Colorado Rockies.
Contreras is currently sidelined with a foot contusion after being hit by a league-leading 18th pitch, forcing him to miss the last two games.
Willson Contreras Nearing Return After Foot Injury
Ahead of the second of a three-game set against the New York Yankees on Saturday, an update surfaced that Contreras is going through a pregame workout to test his sore right foot, with manager Oli Marmol announcing he could be back starting as soon as Sunday or pinch-hitting on Saturday.
“Willson Contreras is going through a pregame workout to test his sore right foot. He was hit by a pitch on Tuesday. Contreras is out of the lineup a third straight game, but if the workout goes well he could pinch-hit tonight or start on Sunday, per Oli Marmol,” wrote MLB.com’s John Denton.

After Move to First Base, Contreras Having Most Durable Cardinals Season
Contreras has been a focal point in St. Louis’s offense in 2025 after transitioning from catcher to first base to increase his availability in the everyday lineup.
The 33-year-old veteran has posted a .255 batting average, .787 OPS, 16 home runs, and 65 RBIs through 114 games for the Cardinals.
He arrived in St. Louis before the 2023 season after an impressive tenure with the Cubs, earning three All-Star selections and a World Series title over seven seasons in Chicago.
Contreras has been a clubhouse leader and mentor for St. Louis and made sure it was known prior to the trade deadline that he intends on staying with the Cardinals long-term.
