Indiana Fever All-Star guard Caitlin Clark is expected to make her return to the starting lineup on Wednesday, according to Fever coach Stephanie White.
White told reporters on Tuesday that “barring any regression,” Clark will be able to play in Wednesday’s game against the Golden State Valkyries as she has been sidelined for the past five games with a groin injury.
However, during her time out of the lineup, she watched Indiana defeat the Minnesota Lynx 74-59 on July 1 to win the Commissioner’s Cup championship. And during practice on Tuesday, Clark told the media that she was “really proud” of her teammates that night.
“They went in there and believed that they could win, they prepared to win, and that’s exactly what they did,” the Fever guard said.
Forward Natasha Howard led Indiana with 16 points and 12 rebounds, while the team had seven steals and four blocked shots in an outstanding defensive effort.
“You know we dictated defensively, and that’s a really hard place to play,” Clark added, referring to the Lynx's arena, the Target Center in Minneapolis, where they had yet to lose a game this season.
“You know it’s one of the hardest places to play, and it’s not just this year, it’s over the course of the Lynx franchise,” Clark continued. “They’ve always dominated on their home court.”
The Lynx are regarded as one of the league’s toughest home teams because they can take control of the game's pace while their fans cheer them on. However, the Fever got the better of them in the Commissioner's Cup championship game by holding forwards Alanna Smith and Napheesa Collier to 15 and 12 points.
Meanwhile, Fever forward Aliyah Boston had 12 points and 11 rebounds against Minnesota while Sophie Cunningham had 13 points off the bench.
“With that type of high stakes, I’m proud of our group,” Clark concluded.
Clark and the Fever are preparing for Wednesday’s game against the Valkyries at noon ET.
