The Phoenix Mercury released rookie center Murjanatu Musa on Tuesday, according to the WNBA transaction website.

Musa comes from Nigeria and went undrafted. She signed a training camp contract with the Mercury during the offseason en route to making the final roster in May.

In 12 appearances Musa averaged 3.3 points, 2.6 rebounds, 0.6 assists and 0.3 steals per game in 10.2 minutes of playing time. Her season high in points scored was eight against the Golden State Valkyries on June 6 in the Commissioner's Cup game.

The 25-year-old could be a solid fit for any team looking to add depth and size to their lineup at a young age. Meanwhile, the Mercury are expected to sign former All-Star forward DeWanna Bonner, according to an ESPN report published on Monday.

The decision to release Musa might have happened because Phoenix’s front office wants to ensure they have enough space to sign Bonner, who previously played for the Indiana Fever. The veteran forward averaged 7.1 points, 3.8 rebounds, 1.6 assists and 1.2 steals in nine games with Indiana.

Bonner spent the majority of her 16-season WNBA career split between Phoenix (2009-19) and the Connecticut Sun (2020-24). The Mercury drafted Bonner No. 5 overall in 2009, and she won three consecutive WNBA Sixth Woman of the Year awards from 2009-11.

She also helped Phoenix win two championships in 2009 and 2014 while becoming a six-time WNBA All-Star. Meanwhile, the Mercury have a 13-6 record and are ranked second in the Western Conference.

They defeated the Dallas Wings 102-72 on Monday, heading into their game on Wednesday against the Minnesota Lynx.
