The Dallas Mavericks Summer League kicks off on Thursday with a highly anticipated matchup against the Los Angeles Lakers, marking the debut of No. 1 overall pick Cooper Flagg.

As the team prepares for the showdown in Las Vegas, they’ve been practicing in full form. During a media session on Tuesday, Flagg was asked about his head coach Jason Kidd and what Kidd has tried to instill in him during their brief time together since draft night.

Flagg revealed that Kidd’s confidence in allowing him to experiment on the court without fearing mistakes has given him "a lot of confidence." Kidd has expressed a desire to see Flagg play some point guard during Summer League.

"It gives me a lot of confidence, obviously, having that kind of messaging, confidence from him," Flagg said. "Just knowing that he's gonna trust me to try some new things. You know, we've talked about him just telling me that you're gonna go through some failure but we're not worried about mistakes or little things like that."

Flagg also added about playing point guard, “Yeah, I’m looking forward to it. Coach Scheyer trusted me a lot last year, and I handled it well… I set up a lot of different actions. I think it’s something I can do at a high level, so I’m excited to experiment and try some new things.”

While Kidd isn’t coaching Summer League—that role belongs to Josh Broghamer—the development of Flagg remains the Mavericks’ top priority. Having a head coach who’s been through the NBA as a player, enjoyed plenty of success, and can now pass along valuable knowledge to young players like Flagg, who is still just 18 years old, is crucial for the franchise’s future.
