Padres' Fernando Tatis Jr. shares hilarious story amid All-Star selection

San Diego Padres outfielder Fernando Tatis Jr. shares a hilarious story amid All-Star selection.

The San Diego Padres are sending Fernando Tatis Jr. and Manny Machado to the 2025 All-Star Game in Atlanta. For Tatis, this honor came as a surprise, evident by the story he told Dennis Lin of The Athletic after getting the news of his All-Star selection.

"I'm not going to lie," Tatis said. "I already had a hotel booked somewhere where I can relax and chill (during the All-Star break). But, you know,  I'm definitely happy. I already canceled my stay at the hotel, and we're going to be out there in Atlanta."

This story from Tatis is a funny one, as it indicates Tatis wasn't expecting to get the All-Star nod this season. Otherwise, he wouldn't have booked a hotel elsewhere.

Tatis in 2025 has a .269 batting average, 87 hits, 15 home runs,  63 runs scored, 12 doubles, two triples, 40 RBIs, 19 stolen bases, 47 walks, and 68 strikeouts. He has a .356 on-base percentage and a .440 slugging percentage, good for a .796 OPS.

While not the most incredible stat lines, and not the best in his career, Tatis does have incredible advanced metrics. According to Baseball Savant, Tatis is 91st percentile in Batting Run Value (17), 90th percentile in Baserunning Run Value (2), and 97th percentile in Fielding Run Value (9).

Tatis has been, statistically, a solid hitter, fielder, and baserunner. But by advanced stats, his numbers are among the best in the league overall. He's been one of the better outfielders in baseball since his debut, and when he plays at his best, he can be one of the game's most dangerous hitters.

While he has solid stats, Tatis didn't expect to make the 2025 All-Star team, evident by his vacation plans during All-Star week. But Tatis made the All-Star team, his third in his MLB career, and the first time he's made back-to-back All-Star rosters.

Tatis is making the trip to Atlanta, and while he won't participate in the Home Run Derby, he will be a member of the All-Star team, something he didn't expect he'd get this season.
