Quite the payday.
Aaron Hicks is having a comfortable 2025.
The New York Yankees are paying him $9.5 million, a solid payday. And he's just hanging out in free agency, not taking an at bat for anyone.
It's mostly just a random observation as New York barrels toward the trade deadline and looks for upgrades. The Yanks are on the line for money they'd probably prefer not to be on the hook for.
New York faced this reality when they released him midway through the 2023 season.
Hicks had signed a seven-year, $70 million contract with the Yankees that runs through the end of this season.
After the Yankees release, he went to the Orioles, then the Angels, before the Angels cut him loose pretty early in the 2024 season.

Since then, he's been a free agent earning plenty of dough from the Yankees.
It's not obvious whether Hicks is interested in a comeback. His bat fell off precipitously in his more recent stints in MLB.
If he doesn't come back, it's not a bad way to go out, earning nearly eight figures in back to back seasons from a team you don't even play for.
The Yankees might want to have that money back, but it's too late.
