The Tennessee Volunteers are looking to get star defensive back Jermod McCoy back from injury as soon as possible. Certainly, head coach Josh Heupel is hoping that he’ll continue to progress and be able to get back on the field in the coming weeks.

Recently, Heupel shared just how active McCoy has been in recent weeks. In particular, he shared that while McCoy was not able to scrimmage, he has been on the practice field and is continuing to progress.

“He was not a part of the scrimmage,” Josh Heupel said. “He’s continuing his rehab, and I think you guys saw him on the practice field with us a few days ago. He’s continuing on that.”

Jermod McCoy tore his ACL last January. Since then, it’s been a long road to recovery. During Fall Camp, however, has been the best opportunity to see the strides he’s taking on the field. That, recently, included doing individual drills for the first time.

A key figure on the Tennessee defense, Josh Heupel knows how key Jermod McCoy is to the Volunteers’ success on defense. A year ago, he produced 44 total tackles and a tackle for a loss with four interceptions and another nine passes defended. Those four interceptions were tied for the second most in the SEC, and he started 12 games. That came in his first season with the Volunteers after transferring in from Oregon State.

Back at SEC Media Days, Josh Heupel gave another update on Jermod McCoy. At the time, he emphasized that it’s about progressing over time for the star defensive back.

“I don’t. I think, with the injury and his rehab process, it’s how he encounters the next phase, the next stage, as he continues to prepare himself and get ready to play. I saw him the other day as he’s going through his rehab, he looks really good. His movement skills are good. It’s a progression throughout the course of the end of the summer and through training camp,” Heupel said at the time.

“We’ll figure that out as we get into the season. Keep in mind, obviously, we want him. He’s a huge part of us defensively, but his short-term and long-term health [are important] as well.”

Expectations are incredibly high for Jermod McCoy. Even coming off the ACL injury, he’d be named First-Team All-SEC in the preseason. So, hopefully, he’ll be ready for game action soon. Tennessee opens with a neutral-site game on August 30th against Syracuse.
