It’s amazing how quickly time passes when there are things to discuss. The Penn State Nittany Lions football team is rounding into the final week of training camp, with the team heading into early game prep for Nevada on Aug 30 this week. At Blue White Illustrated, we’ve been keeping you updated on how camp has progressed for the Nittany Lions over the last two and a half weeks, and a big part of that is the BWI Weekly Chat.

Each week, Blue White Illustrated’s insiders answer questions from premium subscribers on the Lions Den Message Board in our question-and-answer format thread. Here’s what you’re asking, and what we’ve learned this week.

  • Where is freshman Chaz Coleman on the football readiness spectrum compared to past standout defensive ends?
  • What’s the general feeling for Penn State’s recruiting visitor list against Nevada with the White Out looming at the end of September? Can the recruiting staff get a quality list together?
  • Who is emerging in the safety battle opposite Zakee Wheatley?
  • Plus, an update on the most recent practice this weekend to give fans an up-to-date snapshot of camp.

We even discuss some more light-hearted topics, including “What is the best tattoo you’ve seen on a Penn State football player?”

Penn State finds a new star at defensive end?

The questions about Coleman come amid a meteoric rise since arriving on campus. The true freshman had clear talent but even Penn State head coach James Franklin’s staff didn’t expect him to translate this quickly.

“I think we’re all surprised. I mean, we knew he was a talent. Tall, long, athletic, high-level basketball player, quarterback. His senior year, he moves to defensive end, blows up, gets some offers. We offer, he commits. Everybody else still comes after him. Got a great family, and they held true. And we still didn’t know what we were going to get, because he only played one year of defensive end. It’s a long way from the quarterback position. But his physicality and his explosiveness and his motor has been impressive. Everybody’s talking about him. It’s early, but he’s flashed, and there’s a lot of excitement about his abilities. He’s gotten up to 250 pounds in a very, very short period of time. He’s gained like 25 pounds since being on campus, and he’s still skinny, which is the exciting thing. But he’s flashed.”
