Tonight, it became apparent to Alex Bowman and his team that there aren’t many drivers in the garage who like them. It was obvious that Bowman was getting no favors from the other NASCAR drivers on the track as he chased Austin Dillon for the lead.
Did Alex Bowman have the speed to catch and pass Austin Dillon for the win? Maybe. He sure didn’t get to prove it with how he was raced by every lap car in the field.
After the race, crew chief Blake Harris talked about the action on track. The team noted what happened as they were racing through traffic.
“Certainly had the pace to win there. Little disappointed with how we got ran in lap traffic by a few guys,” Harris told Matt Weaver of Sporting News. “Couple apparently have been holding on to some stuff for a really long time, and they got their shot tonight to kinda make it difficult on us. So, disappointed with that because I felt straight up, you know, we were, 30 to go, 20 to go, we were inside the window of where we felt like we needed to be to run him down and still have five, six laps to make the pass. So, just disappointed to see it play out like that.”
A tough finish. Still, P2 in the race and showed speed. While things didn’t work out for Alex Bowman tonight, he has another shot at winning at Daytona next week. Maybe Chase Elliott will repay the favor from Atlanta and push Bowman to the win at Daytona?
Alex Bowman sitting on the bubble for NASCAR Playoffs
Tonight, Austin Dillon won and pushed Alex Bowman to the bubble. Bowman is now 16th in the playoff picture and, unless there is an early DNF for Tyler Reddick, can’t afford a win from a driver below the cutline next week.
Hendrick Motorsports expects Bowman and his teammates to make the playoffs. It is almost not even a question. So, being so close to not making it is not a comfortable position for Bowman to be in. Hendrick can more or less hire whoever they want to drive the 48 car, and if Bowman doesn’t get the job done, then it won’t be hard to find a replacement.
For now, Alex Bowman is fine. He just needs to go and have a race next week that is anticlimactic and boring. He has a comfortable points buffer on Chris Buescher. So, as long as a surprise winner doesn’t emerge, all should be fine and well for Bowman at Daytona.
