Chicago Cubs catcher Miguel Amaya returned to the lineup on Wednesday after being absent since May 25 due to a left oblique strain. The 26-year-old was the team's primary catcher before suffering the injury, and he has a .281 batting average with four home runs and 25 RBIs this season.

The Cubs used Carson Kelly and Reese McGuire behind the plate during Amaya's absence, but he was slotted right back into the starting lineup against the Toronto Blue Jays. His return was expected to be a positive development for a team atop the National League wild-card standings entering Wednesday.

However, the Panamanian left the game early after landing awkwardly while stepping on first base. He had to be carted off the field in Toronto.

"Left ankle sprain, x-rays were taken, negative on the X-rays, which is great," Counsell said. "A little concerned, obviously, at the time of the injury. It's swollen up pretty good already. It's an IL. It's a bad break, bad luck, unfortunately, and we're going to miss him."

The initial injury looked much worse, so that is a silver lining. However, the dark cloud is Amaya is headed back to the IL less than a day after being activated off the 60-day IL.

It's a devastating blow for Amaya, who worked hard to get back to the Cubs lineup only to land right back on the IL.

In a corresponding move, the Cubs are calling up outfielder Owen Caissie, who is their No. 2 prospect, as they approach the final six weeks of the season.

The Cubs finish the series against the Blue Jays on Thursday before returning home for an eight-game homestand against the Pittsburgh Pirates and Milwaukee Brewers.
