The Cincinnati Reds activated right-hander Hunter Greene from the 15-day injured list Wednesday. The 26-year-old will start against the Philadelphia Phillies at Great American Ball Park. Chase Burns was originally slated to pitch the series finale, but the Reds have not yet announced what’s next for the rookie.
Greene has had two stints on the IL this season due to a Grade 1 right groin strain. The second has kept him out since June 4 when he re-aggravated the injury against the Milwaukee Brewers. After his first IL stay, he returned on May 23 and made three starts before being sidelined again.
In 11 starts this season, Greene is 4-3 with a 2.72 ERA over 59 2/3 innings.
His return comes at a pivotal point for Cincinnati, which is trying to gain ground in the National League postseason race. Greene has been a key part of the rotation when healthy, and the Reds will be counting on him to deliver quality innings down the stretch.
The Reds, sitting at 63–58, are two games behind the New York Mets for the final NL Wild Card spot. Cincinnati is in desperate need of wins of any kind at this point. Needing every win they can get, the Reds got six shutout innings from Brady Singer in Tuesday’s 6-1 victory over the Phillies, pushing the series to a winner-take-all game Wednesday.
