Alaska high school football fans will be able to hit the stadiums on the Last Frontier and catch some Friday night action.

We dive in to the 2025 high school football season seeing the teams that will be competing for state championships and give you our prediction now on who will be hoisting titles later.

Division I: Dimond

For the first time in 23 years, the Lynx were able to win a Alaska state championship when they defeated West Anchorage in Alaska’s ASAA highest classification. Now Dimond is looking for the repeat of the magical 11-0 season in 2024 and all the key components are returning in order for the Lynx to pull off such. The maestro to the offense is back in quarterback Cayden Pili, who led Dimond to a 11-0 record last year. Pili finished the season completing 96 of 187 passes for 1,744 yards and 18 touchdowns. He also added 950 yards and 22 touchdowns on the ground to lead the rushing attack. Defensively, the team’s second-leading tackler from ’24 is back in Abraham Tauanuu, who tallied 63 tackles, five going for a loss.

Division II: Soldotna

Winning state championships is in the DNA of the Stars, who clinched the program’s 14th last season when they defeated Lathrop, 48-28. It was the fifth year in a row that the two teams have squared off for a state title and it looks very much so that it could come down to that again. What also looks imminent is Soldotna clinching a 15th state crown in program history. The offense fueled the Stars to victory a year ago and they bring back starting quarterback Owen Buckbee and workhorse running back Andon Wolverton, who rushed for well over 1,000 yards in 2024. Though the team graduates do-everything Wyatt Faircloth, the Stars are still plenty capable of winning another title.

Division III: Homer

2024 was a first for the Mariners as they had always played 9-man football, but last year was the program’s baptism into Alaska 11-man ball. It went pretty swimmingly for Homer as they came away with the program’s first-ever state championship in 11-on-11 tackle football when they defeated Kenai Central, 16-0. Now is the road back to competing to win a third state title in the last four years, and the team featured a slew of underclassmen dotted all along the roster. Homer will have strong competition from Barrow and Kenai Central, but look for the Mariners to repeat as state champions.

9-man: Seward

The Seahawks’ offensively could not be stopped on their way to the 9-man state championship, as they averaged a staggering 55.5 points per game. Seward had no problems in the final when they cruised to a 36-6 victory over Nikiski last year and now the team will need to find new playmakers to power another state title run. Athlete Ethan Cross and wide receiver Lane Petersen are the team’s top two yard getters from 2024.
