Boston Red Sox third baseman Alex Bregman is set to cash in this offseason if he opts out of his current contract.
Red Sox All-Star Alex Bregman Set to Cash in After Devers Fallout originally appeared on Athlon Sports.
When Alex Bregman signed with the Boston Red Sox, no one could have foreseen the ripple effects it would have on the landscape of Major League Baseball. The acquisition forced franchise cornerstone Rafael Devers, after a long and winding road of dysfunction, out of town. Signing Bregman to a three-year, $120 million contract also set Boston up for disaster if the former World Series champion triggers his opt-out following the season, leaving the club with no fallback option.
Despite the chaos his signing triggered, Bregman is seen as a big winner. With the ability to forgo the final two years of his contract and cash in on another All-Star selection, The Athletic’s Jayson Stark believes Bregman has set himself up for another massive payday at the end of the 2025 season.
“He’s already making $40 million a year in the first year of his free-agent deal with the Red Sox … so nobody has to worry about Bregman’s earning power,” Stark writes. “But he can (and almost certainly will) opt out. And when you combine his 158 OPS+, his in-it-to-win-it intensity, and the ripple effects of the Devers trade, he’s in prime position to cash in.”
Stark goes on to share what an American League executive shared with him about Bregman’s expected impending free-agent status.
“I’ve been laughing about this for two weeks,” one AL exec told Stark, “just thinking about (his agent) Scott Boras’ reaction to the Devers trade with Bregman, because you know he’s sitting there thinking: ‘Just give me a blank check, because whatever I want, you guys are going to have to pay me.’”
Although Boras and Bregman have stated they are open to re-signing with the Red Sox, the game needs to be played. Not the one on the diamond, but the one with agents and front offices. Will Boston enter into a bidding war for Bregman? Or will chief baseball officer Craig Breslow elect to let another elite third baseman walk out the doors of Fenway for the second time in under a year?
While the Red Sox attempt to claw their way into a Wild Card spot, Bregman will be a key piece to their ascent. But as the season progresses, the now three-time All-Star could be planning his future elsewhere.
