On Monday, the Los Angeles Dodgers and Los Angeles Angels clashed in the opening game of a three-game Freeway Series at Angel Stadium, reigniting their rivalry. The Dodgers, coming off a series win against the Toronto Blue Jays, have struggled in recent weeks and are aiming to rebound, while the Angels, struggling through a another poor season, sought to play spoiler against their crosstown rivals.
The game featured two of baseball’s elite stars – Shohei Ohtani facing his former team and Mike Trout anchoring the Angels’ lineup. However, a contentious moment during the 5th inning shifted fans attention from the action on the field to the umpiring.
Jo Adell’s Ejection Ignites Umpire Controversy
During the game, Los Angeles Angels outfielder Jo Adell was ejected by home plate umpire Dan Iassogna after arguing a called strike during an at-bat. Adell, visibly frustrated by an automatic pitch clock strike call at the start of his plate appearance, appeared to exchange words with Iassogna while walking away, prompting a swift ejection – the first of his Major League career.

“Fire the ump calling the dodgers game immediately,” one fan wrote.
“The umpire needs too be fined that was some bs must have the over and under on the dodgers,” another fan added.
“Usually, if you know an umpire’s name, there’s a 95% chance they’re horrible. I’ve know Iassogna’s name for years,” a fan noted.

Dodgers’ and Angels’ Form This Season
The Dodgers went on to lose the game, now owning a 68-50 record. They sit atop the NL West, but have struggled of late despite Ohtani’s continued push for another NL MVP award. The Angels, at 56-62, came into the game having lost five straight, but picked up an impressive win.
While the Dodgers remain poised to make the playoffs, the reigning World Series champions have looked like a shadow of themselves many times this season and are 10-12 since the All-Star break. As for the Angels who have not made the playoffs since 2014, they are in a race against time to end their postseason drought, and will need to bounce back quickly.
