Two weeks removed from the season opener, Missouri has not named a starting quarterback. Sam Horn and Beau Pribula are still battling for the role ahead of Central Arkansas. Head coach Eli Drinkwitz will have a decision to make at some point but for now, the situation remains fluid.
Quarterbacks are always going to draw the most attention to a team, especially when the commodity is not well-known. Drinkwitz admits the position is Missouri’s biggest question mark at the moment. He feels good about most of the roster, just needing to see someone emerge at quarterback to bring full confidence.
“I think that’s the biggest question mark of our team,” Drinkwitz said Thursday via The Paul Finebaum Show. ” … Really, Sam Horn and Beau, both of them have been really good in fall camp. Both of them have managed the situation really well. Hasn’t been a ton of separation. Last week, I felt like there was maybe some and the other guy just came back in and clawed his way into it. Still a little bit left to figure out there.”
Horn is entering his fourth season with the program, having little experience. An injury kept him out in 2024, preventing him from getting on the field. However, Horn has four career games on his resume, completing three of eight passes for 54 yards and a touchdown.
Pribula has a little more playing time in his back pocket. His career started in the Big Ten with the Penn State Nittany Lions, most recently serving as the backup quarterback behind Drew Allar. Missouri got him out of the NCAA transfer portal this offseason.
Penn State would usually use Pribula as a runner, giving him 94 carries the past two seasons for 571 yards and 10 touchdowns. His passing numbers are not too bad for someone who has not been the starter, completing 66.1% of 56 throws for 424 yards, nine touchdowns, and no interceptions.
To this point, Drinkwitz has not given a timeline as to when a starter will be named. Given the opener is against Central Arkansas, he might have the luxury of giving both guys some game action. We have seen multiple quarterback competitions bleed into the regular season.
Heading into the Kansas game, you have to imagine Drinkwitz will want to have his full-time guy. There is a reason the position is a huge question right now — hopefully getting some answers soon.
