A knee injury jeopardizes the Kenyan defender’s start to the season.
Joseph Okumu / Stade de Reims
Joseph Okumu will be out of action for several months. The Kenyan defender for Stade de Reims sustained a left knee injury last Monday against Amiens, during the opening day of the French Ligue 2 at the Auguste-Delaune stadium.
Stade de Reims has been dealt a blow at the start of the 2025/26 season. After just one appearance in Ligue 2, the Auguste Delaune club is forced to do without one of its defensive mainstays. Joseph Okumu was forced off the pitch early following a collision in the first half of the match against Amiens. The club gave an update on his condition early this Thursday, August 14, 2025, in an official statement.
"Initial tests have confirmed a serious ligament injury to the left knee. Further examinations will be conducted over the coming days to determine the exact nature of the injury and to decide on the next steps for his treatment. Unfortunately, Joseph will be sidelined for several months," wrote Stade de Reims.
The Kenyan player, who joined Champagne in July 2023 from Gent, is a key figure in the Reims central defense. His absence is a major setback for coach Karel Geraerts, who will have to reorganize his back line ahead of the league campaign. During the 2024-2025 season, Joseph Okumu played 22 Ligue 1 matches for Reims, scored one goal, and was named the club’s player of the month last February.
