The 36-year-old who has spent the bulk of his career in Hannover, has made it clear in recent days of his wish to return to his home town club.
Zieler, who has over 250 Bundesliga appearances to his name, has signed a two-year deal with Die Geißböcke as he aims to help boost their bid to cement themselves back in the Bundesliga.
Upon the announcement of the transfer, Zieler said: “This is my home. But until Thomas Kessler called, I actually didn't think about moving. Because Hannover has also become home over the years. I had open discussions with both sides. From the very beginning, I felt a great deal of appreciation from FC and was shown a clear perspective for the time after my playing career, which was extremely important to me. That's why I decided to stay at my hometown club, where I will give my all for at least another two years to ensure success with the team,".
Also speaking to the club’s website, Sporting Director Thomas Kessler said: “I am delighted that we were able to secure Ron for FC. Our discussions with him were very open and positive from the start. We quickly realised that he wanted to take on this sporting challenge and was willing to contribute his qualities and extensive experience to the team. His leadership skills on and off the pitch, as well as his willingness to take on responsibility, were crucial factors for us.”.
Zieler - a World Cup winner with Joachim Löw’s 2014 Germany team - becomes the fourth signing of the summer for FC Köln.
With a transfer fee of around €200,000 being reported, this could represent shrewd business for the newly promoted side as they carry on their squad building for the upcoming Bundesliga season.
