Greg McElroy talked about the Colorado Buffaloes football program's roster turnover in 2025, and why it might not be that bad for Deion Sanders and Co.
Colorado Buffaloes coach Deion Sanders has many tough questions to answer during the 2025 college football season without his sons and his top overall recruit and Heisman Trophy winner, Travis Hunter.
One of them is how he’ll replace Shedeur Sanders under center. While we know Kaidon Salter and Julian Lewis will be manning the quarterback position, we don’t know how Coach Prime, Pat Shurmur, and Co. are going to divvy up snaps. It appears right now that Liberty Flames transfer holds the edge over the 4-star freshman.
Making matters trickier for the Buffs, Sanders’ top receiving targets beyond Hunter, including his definitive No. 2, LaJontay Wester, are now in the NFL with him.
One former NFL and national champion quarterback doesn’t believe it’s that tricky of a situation at all, though.
Greg McElroy believes in Coach Prime figuring it out with his personnel during a 2025 campaign in which most don’t expect to reach the nine-win benchmark set last season in Boulder.
"Shedeur Sanders is gone. Obviously, great personnel at wide receiver is gone. But I still look at some of the guys that are able to go get Kaidon Salter, a transfer from Liberty; whether they have him or Julian Lewis, the talented freshman, whoever it ends up being, they're going to probably be okay at quarterback,” McElroy said on his “Always College Football” podcast.
Colorado has a receiving corps that has two long-term options, Omarion Miller and Dre’lon Miller, and a host of upperclassmen transfers. There will be a natural fall-off from Heisman-level production, coupled with several other NFL talents across the line of scrimmage, but it shouldn’t be poignant.
Salter isn’t breaking Shedeur’s newly set passing records, but he does offer more versatility as a runner, potentially opening up the offense for what is expected to be an improved running back room.
The Buffs may not slide back into irrelevancy if the top-line talent they have at their skill positions work out.
