The St. Louis Cardinals, nearing the end of June, looked like a team that would be buyers at the MLB trade deadline. But, after losing five of six, including a three-game shutout to the Pittsburgh Pirates, there were some concerns.

One of the main concerns stemmed from the starting pitching, and especially veteran Erick Fedde. The 2024 Cardinals trade deadline pickup has been rumored in trade talks for a while, and things are finally developing after his latest start.

After Fedde's latest start, Cardinals manager Oli Marmol spoke on Fedde's future in the rotation. Katie Woo of The Athletic shared his comments, as he answered a question about what's next for Fedde.

"We'll use tomorrow as an off day to take a step back and figure out what that looks like," Marmol said. "He has to find a solution to what's going on. ... Continuing to go down this road doesn't seem beneficial at the moment."

While he doesn't outright say that Fedde is going to be cut, traded, or demoted, he is insinuating that the Cardinals will be making a decision on the veteran starter in the future.

The 32-year-old righty is coming off a few bad starts in a row, and in his latest outing, he only went 1.1 innings, allowing three earned runs. Over his last three outings, Fedde has a 15.30 ERA, as he's allowed 17 runs in 10.0 innings of work.

His struggles this season have culminated in a 4.79 ERA with a 3-9 record through 18 starts. What makes this season-long performance so frustrating is that Fedde had a complete game shutout earlier in the year, proving he's capable of pitching well.

But his performances lately have been more than underwhelming. The Cardinals are looking to shake up their starting rotation by this year's trade deadline, and Fedde is the most likely to be moved on from.

Miles Mikolas has a no-trade clause and could only be moved on from if they release him, which doesn't seem likely despite his major struggles.

But, for Fedde, he's in the final year of his deal and is a free agent after the season. Even though the Cardinals were described as buyers, Fedde was still a trade candidate.

With Michael McGreevy waiting in the minors, the Cardinals are more than ready to move on from Fedde. The only issue has been when. But, after this recent outing and Marmol's comments, the end of the line for Fedde in St. Louis seems to be soon.
