The Boston Red Sox's trade deadline plan should be to buy following Craig Breslow's belief that the team will be better off without Rafael Devers.
Red Sox Should Be Buyers at Trade Deadline Following Craig Breslow’s Rafael Devers Comments originally appeared on Athlon Sports.
The Boston Red Sox are one of Major League Baseball's most interesting teams this season. After the massive trade of Rafael Devers, all eyes are on the Red Sox and Craig Breslow to see what moves they will pull off next.
With the trade deadline rapidly approaching, the Red Sox need to make a decision on what direction they should take. For Steve Buckley of The Athletic, the Red Sox's plan after trading Devers is clear.
"Breslow has already made his for-the-future move by moving Rafael Devers and his contract to the San Francisco Giants." Buckley wrote. "And remember, Breslow had posited that the move might make the Red Sox a better team this season. If he truly believes that, he needs to make the moves that make him right."
Breslow's comments after the Devers trade were met with plenty of scrutiny. His belief that the team would finish better than they would if he were on the roster was controversial, and yet, if he believes it, he hasn't shown it.
The Red Sox, if they're looking to compete this year like Breslow claims, need to make a move at the MLB trade deadline. Whether it's a starting pitcher, a first baseman, or more bullpen help, the Red Sox need to make additions.
Boston has been at the center of trade rumors, but not in acquiring players, but trading them away. Jarren Duran and Aroldis Chapman are viewed as strong candidates to be traded, despite the Red Sox intending to compete.
If Breslow is serious about making a postseason push, he needs to spend some of the money and use the flexibility from trading away Devers to improve the roster this season.
The Red Sox can't sit still at the trade deadline. They either need to commit to a fire sale, which would draw the ire of the fan base, or buy into what Breslow believes and land some MLB-ready talents for a postseason run this year.
Trading away Devers revealed the plan for Boston, and after three of his offseason additions, Alex Bregman, Garrett Crochet, and Aroldis Chapman were named to the AL All-Star team, there's even more reason to put his money where his mouth is.
Boston has a postseason caliber roster, but they need to make moves in the starting rotation and at first base. If Breslow is to be believed when he thinks the team is better off without Devers, the Red Sox need to address those needs by the MLB trade deadline.
