Yankees prospects raising their value as trade deadline approaches originally appeared on Athlon Sports.
Rafael Flores wasn’t the most hyped name in the system, but he’s forcing his way into every conversation. The 21-year-old slugger leads Double-A Somerset in RBIs and ranks second in the entire Eastern League. If the Yankees don’t trade him, they might need to find room for him soon.
TRIPLE-A SCRANTON/WILKES-BARRE
Center fielder Spencer Jones has made a strong impression on the Yankees and opposing scouts since his promotion from Double-A Somerset. In eight games, he’s hitting .375 (12-for-32) with four home runs and eight RBIs. Jones has 20 home runs and 82 strikeouts in 207 at-bats between Scranton and Somerset.
Outfielder Everson Pereira hit for the cycle and finished with five hits and six RBIs in Saturday night’s win over Lehigh Valley. He’s batting .262 overall with 15 home runs and 45 RBIs. Pereira is hitting .435 in July with three homers and 11 RBIs in five games.
DOUBLE-A SOMERSET
Shortstop George Lombard Jr. continues to struggle offensively. He went 3-for-19 (.158) with two RBIs last week and is hitting .204 in 54 games. However, he has 14 stolen bases in 16 attempts and showcased strong baserunning instincts in Sunday’s game against Reading.
Slugger Rafael Flores ranks second in the Eastern League with 54 RBIs, picking up six more last week. He’s batting .285 with 14 home runs.
Right-hander Carlos Lagrange (7-4, 4.43 ERA between Hudson Valley and Somerset) dominated Wednesday’s start in Reading, allowing one hit and striking out 10 over six innings. He has 98 strikeouts in 67 innings overall.
CLASS-A HUDSON VALLEY
Right-hander Elmer Rodriguez-Cruz delivered another standout performance Saturday, allowing two hits and striking out eight in seven shutout innings against Brooklyn. He’s 6-4 with a 2.26 ERA and leads the league with 99 strikeouts over 83 2/3 innings.
Left-hander Griffin Herring rebounded from his worst outing of the year by allowing just one run on four hits across seven innings Thursday vs. Brooklyn. His ERA between Hudson Valley and Tampa sits at 1.61.
CLASS-A TAMPA
Right-hander Andrew Landry (4-3) ranks seventh in the FSL with a 4.20 ERA and sixth with 63 strikeouts.
Outfielders Marshall Toole (.305) and Tyler Wilson (.301) rank third and fourth in the FSL in batting average.
