This offseason was a scary one for Colorado Buffaloes head coach Deion Sanders. After rumors about his health bubbled to the surface, Sanders announced ahead of Fall Camp that he battled and beat bladder cancer during the offseason.

Now, the season is just around the corner. If his health was a concern at one point in the offseason, luckily, Sanders shared that he is feeling much better since announcing the diagnosis and is ready for the season to get underway.

“I’m good,” Deion Sanders said. “Thank you. I’m healthy. I’m vibrant. I’m my old self. We walk every day after practice around campus, at least a mile. I’m loving life right now. I’m trying my best to live to the fullest, considering what transpired.”

At the time of Sanders’ cancer announcement, there were some questions about how it would impact his day-to-day as a coach. His doctor, Janet Kukreja, explained that the surgery that Sanders needed to remove his bladder would change his way of life. At the same time, with a good outlook, he should be able to continue coaching at full strength.

When Deion Sanders initially made his announcement, he looked to emphasize that was concerned that he was going to die. He even revealed that in May he had made a will. That, in and of itself, once again forced him to rank his own children as he did so.

“First thing’s first. You don’t want to be a fool and leave and not have your business affairs in order. The funny thing is about that, you sitting up there, ranking your kids again. ‘Let me see, Shilo deserves how much? [Shelomi], you know she left Colorado to go elsewhere. Let me see.’ You’re really going through this stuff,” Sanders said. “Making sure your mama is straight. You know I’m serious. You rank your kids too. I’m not the only one. You have to deal with that and going through that so you’re straight.”

Luckily, Deion Sanders did beat his bladder cancer. Now, he’s going to once again be on the sidelines for the Buffaloes in a season where he’s going to have a completely new-look roster. They’ll be tested right out of the gate too. Colorado opens the season against a tough Georgia Tech team on August 29th.

Robert Livingston describes the feeling around Colorado practice with Deion Sanders back

Everyone at Colorado is happy to have Deion Sanders back on the field where he belongs. It, as defensive coordinator Robert Livingston recently shared, comes as a testament to Sanders himself.

“Who he is as a person, we talked about that. I haven’t seen him in a long time. Friday, we have a staff meeting and we’re kind of talking one-on-one. We’re having a conversation and the first thing he asks about is my family. We talked about Luke played baseball, my son. Prime’s talking about his stance and all these things and he wants to know how that’s going. It’s just a testament to who he is,” Livingston said.

“Obviously, his leadership is one-of-one. He’s the pied piper. The world would follow him if they just listen to him. We’re blessed. We’re talking about a life here. So this football stuff, it doesn’t really matter at the end of the day. But it’s a testament to who he was. He keeps a tight inner circle. He was away and we were working, just knowing that when he comes back he’s going to hit the ground running.”
