WNBA Player Takes 'Risk' When Making League History on Sunday originally appeared on Athlon Sports.
The Las Vegas Aces faced the Connecticut Sun on Sunday in the fourth game of their five-game road trip. Entering the afternoon, they were 2-1, with their lone loss coming against the Caitlin Clark-less Indiana Fever.
The game stayed close in the first quarter, but a big second quarter from Vegas proved to be the difference. The Aces outscored the two-win Sun 27-16 in that frame and held the lead the rest of the way, winning 86-68.
It was in the third quarter when Aces guard Chelsea Gray made WNBA history. With an assist to A’ja Wilson, who finished the play with an and-one, Gray passed her head coach, Becky Hammon, on the WNBA all-time assist list.
Gray now ranks sixth all-time with 1,710 assists, while Hammon sits seventh with 1,708.
After the game, Gray took to social media to acknowledge how risky the pass to Wilson was. The three-time WNBA champion threw it with one hand over several Sun defenders.
"Wow, kind took a crazy risk on that one," Gray said. "Blessed and thankful!"

The 5-foot-11 guard finished the game with six points, two rebounds and eight assists.
Gray is in her 11th season in the WNBA after being drafted by the Sun 11th overall in 2014. She spent one season in Connecticut before playing five seasons for the Los Angeles Sparks. The six-time WNBA All-Star then signed with the Aces as a free agent ahead of the 2021 season.
In 18 appearances so far in 2025, Gray is averaging 12.8 points, 3.9 rebounds and 4.4 assists per game.
