For the first time in two seasons, Alabama will be starting a quarterback NOT named Jalen Milroe in 2025. Their starter will either be redshirt-junior Ty Simpson, redshirt-sophomore Austin Mack or freshman Keelon Russell, with Simpson reportedly in the lead for the job.
Russell and Mack are likely fighting for the backup role instead of the starter role, but both arms are supremely talented in their own right. Russell was also a five-star recruit (ranked No. 2 overall in the Class of 2025), while Mack was a four-star recruit (ranked No. 219 in Class of 2023) and transferred to Alabama with Kalen DeBoer from Washington.
Simpson has attempted 50 passes over the span of his three seasons for just 381 yards and no touchdowns. He was a five-star recruit (ranked No. 25 overall in his class) coming out of Westview (Martin, TN) in 2022 and is the likely front-runner for the starting spot.
DeBoer gushes over the play of Simpson, Russell and Mack
DeBoer discussed the play of the trio in Alabama‘s first scrimmage on Saturday. He especially lauded their ability to take care of the football and commanding a huddle.
“The biggest thing with those guys, the quarterbacks, is they’ve done a great job taking care of the football,” DeBoer said. “No picks today and a few touchdown passes between all three of them. The completion percentage over the course of camp for all three has been in that range that we want. We like to have a minimum of 65 percent and they’ve just done a good job being consistent. They also take care of the football. I think there’s been maybe three picks all camp, and you’re talking about seven-on-seven drills and team drills.”
“But they’ve done a good job taking of the football and I think commanding in the huddle. The two guys that have been around the longest, Ty [Simpson] and Austin [Mack] get in the huddle and rattle off a play and they’re sharp and confident with it. Keelon [Russell] is still learning these things, but he’s doing a great job. Progress is something that you hope for and he’s right there. Explosive opportunities and they’ve got the ball there. They deliver there and there’s been very few times where we haven’t thrown on time and weren’t confident with where we were throwing the ball.”
Alabama and its new quarterback, whoever it may be, opens the 2025 season at Florida State on Aug. 30. Kick-off is scheduled for 3:30 PM on ABC.
