PSG Land Chevalier in €40m Deal as Donnarumma Faces Exit

Paris Saint-Germain have secured the signing of Lille goalkeeper Lucas Chevalier on a five-year contract, with ESPN reporting a transfer fee of €40 million plus up to €15 million in potential bonuses. At just 23 years old, Chevalier is set to become PSG’s new No. 1, signalling the end of Gianluigi Donnarumma’s time in the French capital.

According to ESPN’s sources, “Chevalier… has passed his medical in Paris and will be their new No. 1 goalkeeper,” leaving Donnarumma to seek a move elsewhere. Chelsea, Manchester United and Inter Milan have all reportedly contacted his agent, Enzo Raiola.

Donnarumma Contract Dispute Fuels Exit

The Italy international, who earns €850,000 a month, had been keen to extend his PSG stay with one year left on his contract. However, ESPN report that “the two parties never found an agreement.”

Donnarumma wanted a pay rise but refused to accept the new salary structure introduced by sporting director Luis Campos, which offers lower base pay but larger performance-based incentives.

Tactical Shift Behind Keeper Change

Despite being a Champions League hero last season — with key saves against Liverpool, Aston Villa and Arsenal — Donnarumma’s distribution has been a point of concern for manager Luis Enrique. ESPN note that Enrique “wanted a keeper with better distribution and who is more comfortable with the ball at his feet, which Chevalier is.”

This move marks a clear shift in PSG’s approach, prioritising ball-playing ability from the back over pure shot-stopping pedigree.

Potential Premier League Interest

With PSG unwilling to keep two top keepers, Donnarumma is expected to attract high-profile offers. Chelsea’s goalkeeping situation remains fluid, while Manchester United could view him as a marquee upgrade. Inter Milan, meanwhile, may be tempted to bring the Italian back to Serie A.

Our View – EPL Index Analysis

From a Manchester United supporter’s perspective, this development is intriguing. Donnarumma’s availability adds a world-class name to the transfer market at a time when United’s goalkeeping situation is still under scrutiny. While André Onana has shown flashes of brilliance, his form has also been inconsistent, particularly under high pressing situations in the Premier League.

A United fan might see Donnarumma as a statement signing — a proven Champions League winner who thrives in big moments. His performances against Liverpool, Aston Villa and Arsenal last season would not go unnoticed. The concern, however, lies in the financial aspect. United’s wage structure is already a delicate issue, and matching or exceeding €850,000 a month could create internal tension, especially given the club’s commitment to long-term sustainability.

There’s also the tactical question. Ruben Amorim values keepers comfortable in possession — the very skill PSG believe Donnarumma lacks compared to Chevalier. If Amorim sticks to his philosophy, the Italian may not be the ideal fit despite his shot-stopping prowess.

Still, the prospect of stealing a Champions League-winning goalkeeper from PSG — especially if Chelsea are also in the race — could appeal to both the board and the fans. Whether United act on this opportunity could depend on whether Amorim prioritises experience and big-game mentality over distribution from the back.
