Barcelona facing race against time to activate Denzel Dumfries €25m clause

Barcelona are facing a race against time to sign Inter Milan defender Denzel Dumfries, SPORT reports.

The Dutch fullback has been on Barca’s radar for a while, and the Blaugranas now have the chance to snap him up for a bargain fee.

Dumfries is poised to leave Inter this summer and has a €25 million release clause in his contract. But interested parties must activate that clause before July 15.

With Dumfries available for a cut-price fee, a number of clubs are interested in the Dutchman, but his agent Jorge Mendes is pushing for a move to Barca.

Reports coming out of Italy claim Barca are also open to signing Dumfries after missing out on Spain star Nico Williams, who has pledged his long-term future to Athletic Club.

Dumfries will command a salary package worth around €4m per year. That works for Barca, and Hansi Flick is reportedly a big fan of the Netherlands international.

The German manager sees Dumfries as a perfect fit for his high-octane, attacking brand of football. 

He’s seen as a player who can add physicality, speed, and thrust to Barca’s attack without neglecting his primary defensive duties.

Flick got to see firsthand what Dumfries brings to the table when Barca and Inter locked horns in the Champions League last season, and is keen for him to provide competition for Jules Kounde.

But snapping him up will not be straightforward for Barca. The La Liga champions are still trying to sort out their finances, so it remains to be seen if they can activate Dumfries’ clause before July 15.

If they don’t, Inter are well within their rights to demand significantly more, considering the player has three years left on his contract.

Dumfries is also keen to join Barca. He’s drawn by the club’s long-term vision and strong project under Flick’s leadership.

He has already told Mendes to pursue a deal, but it’s now up to Barca to cough up the transfer fee.
