Manchester United are now poised to officially suffer their second snub of the summer with Viktor Gyokeres closing in on a move to Arsenal.

After already being made to watch on while first-choice striker target Liam Delap chose to join Chelsea earlier in the window, the Red Devils had hoped they could utilise Ruben Amorim’s links to Gyokeres and convince him to make the move to Old Trafford.

Yet, David Ornstein confirmed on Sunday that the Sweden international had entered ‘advanced talks’ with Arsenal. The ‘situation is progressing’ rapidly as Mikel Arteta pushes for a ‘swift conclusion’ to the lengthy saga.

It’s previously been claimed that the decisive factor in Gyokeres’ thinking ultimately came down to which side would allow him to play Champions League football next season. Of course, United’s 15th-placed finish in comparison to the Gunners’ second instantly made them the more lucrative suitor.

While the 27-year-old has yet to prove himself in the English top flight, his numbers last season make it crystal clear why INEOS were sizing up a move; 54 goals in 52 games across 2024/2025 saw Gyokeres establish himself as one of the most prolific frontmen in Europe.

What next for United?

Alas, it remains to be seen where United will turn now.

Amorim’s players will report back to Carrington for the start of pre-season today, with Matheus Cunha and 18-year-old Diego Leon, whose deal was finalised back in January, the only new faces amongst the squad.

Reports over the weekend have suggested Dominic Calvert-Lewin, 28, has been added to the club’s shortlist following his release from Everton last week. He has racked up 57 goals and 18 assists in 239 Premier League matches, and he is considered one of the more injury-prone/unreliable players to have in the ranks.
