The Quarterback room is one of the only positions this year without a question mark – thanks in part to a judge and Diego Pavia. Behind Diego this season is Blaze Berlowitz, a 6-3 Junior. Blaze has yet to touch the field for the Commodores. The last action we saw him in was the Conference USA Championship game for New Mexico State where he threw for 134 yards and a touchdown.

Blaze was first asked about what he has worked on this off season the most and he talked about ball security. “The shots will come but when they aren’t there you gotta take it down and protect the ball.” He talked about ball security drills and 11 on 11 being where he works on this the most.

Camaraderie within the team is what has most helped Berlowitz this off season “Just being around the guys and really just building that brotherhood and relationships with everybody. That’s where I got the increase the most. That comes along with playing together, and when you have that the production on the field follows.”

When asked about returning, he said it was Coach Beck and Coach Al that convinced him to come “with Nate [Johnson] leaving, it was time for me to step up. I went to the weight room and starting being around Diego as much as possible. We are best friends and working together and being around the teammates and building a relationship has been huge for the leadership.”

When asked how he is different from Diego, Blaze said

“he is super super gritty, and I like to think of myself the same. He is a little bit better runner than me and I like to sit in the pocket a little longer. But at the end of the day we are all ball players and going to do whatever it takes to win.”

When asked about waiting his turn Berlowitz talked about “everyone’s journey is different” but has learned a lot from Diego in their time together. “So I’ve just been encouraging him, being the best teammate I can be, but at the same time getting better and pushing him because he does the same with me.”

Tre Richardson was brought up and Blaze gave a glowing endorsement on the speed of Richardson. “It’s nice knowing on the outside you have a deep threat, someone that can take the top off and if you have time know you are going there. That explosive piece is always nice to have out there.”

MK Young is a running back that was at New Mexico State alongside Berlowitz, when asked he talked about Young’s ability to make the first man miss and how versatile he is as a back.

“Whatever you want, MK can do it all. He’s a threat on third down catching the ball.”
