PISCATAWAY – Cam Miller knew he wanted to stay in the Big Ten.
The cornerback was already plenty familiar with Rutgers football.
So why not choose the Scarlet Knights as his destination?
That’s exactly what Miller did last January, transferring from Penn State to Rutgers, bringing valuable experience to the Scarlet Knights’ secondary – and receiving a big opportunity in the process.
“I knew I wanted to stay in the Big Ten,” Miller said following the Scarlet Knights’ training camp practice Wednesday, Aug. 6. “Coming out of high school, I was considering Rutgers, so that was my No. 2. Once I decided to transfer I knew I wanted come here, based off high school.”
It was a good fit for both sides.
Miller, who has one year of eligibility remaining, will help a Rutgers defense that needs to replace Robert Longerbeam and Eric Rogers, among others. It remains to be seen what exactly Miller’s role will be, but he gave the Scarlet Knights another weapon in a cornerback unit that includes Al-Shadee Salaam, Bo Mascoe and Marshall transfer Jacobie Henderson.
“I believe the Big Ten is the best conference. Just the competition, being in it for three years, I like the game style, the play, the physicality,” Miller said. “I wanted to stay in it.”
The 6-foot-, 192-pound Miller had a large role with the Nittany Lions. He played in all 16 gams last season (four starts) and had 27 tackles (four for loss), one sack and five pass breakups.
A product of Trinity Christian Academy in Florida, he was a four-star recruit and the No. 31 prospect in Florida for the Class of 2022, according to the 247Sports Composite.
Rutgers recruited him out of high school and that familiarity helped when he was in the portal.
So did the opportunity to play for Greg Schiano, who continues to develop defensive backs who go on to have prosperous careers in the NFL.
“Just knowing what Coach Schiano has done with DBs in the past, development,” Miller said. “Seeing that track record and knowing what I have, and things I need to work on, I felt like this was the place.”
It’s also helped that there are some familiar faces on the coaching staff – co-defensive coordinator Robb Smith was a defensive analyst at Penn State the previous two seasons and new Scarlet Knights safeties coach Vic Hall was also an analyst with the Nittany Lions last season.
“It helped out having familiar faces,” Miller said. “The defense is different, but it’s good having those guys already knowing me for three years.”
How good does Miller think Rutgers’ secondary can be?
“The sky’s the limit,” Miller said. “We’ve just got to keep taking it day by day and we’ll see where we are.”
