Could Toronto Shock the NHL With a McDavid-Matthews Combo?

Would be an incredible duo.

Connor McDavid still has a season to go on his contract with the Edmonton Oilers, but talk of where he might play next is already gaining steam. One possibility stands out more than the rest, a move to Toronto that would unite him with fellow star center Auston Matthews.

The McDavid-to-Toronto Theory

In a recent feature by Bleacher Report’s Adam Gretz, seven teams were highlighted as possible landing spots for McDavid if he leaves Edmonton after the 2025-26 season. Among them, the Toronto Maple Leafs stand out, and not just because of their status as Canada’s largest hockey market.

Gretz envisions a scenario where Toronto lands McDavid, forming a dynamic duo with Matthews that could reshape the balance of power in the NHL.

“The Maple Leafs already have their own superstar and No. 1 center in Auston Matthews,” Gretz wrote. “But if McDavid ever does become available, Toronto would have to find a way to get involved in the bidding.”

McDavid, who was born in the Greater Toronto Area, could find the allure of playing for his hometown team irresistible, especially if the Leafs are ready to contend for a title. Gretz emphasized that kind of opportunity doesn't come around often, a chance for Canada’s biggest franchise to land the nation’s top player.

Where Things Stand in Edmonton

For now, McDavid is preparing to enter the final year of his deal with the Oilers. While many expect Edmonton to put forward a record-setting offer, no formal talks have taken place yet.

General Manager Stan Bowman explained the situation at the outset of free agency: “We haven’t talked to him at all about his contract. It’s really just been talking to him about our team and how we can improve and what he sees and that kind of stuff.”

The lack of negotiation activity doesn’t necessarily mean anything is amiss, but it does open the door to speculation. And when a player of McDavid’s caliber is involved, that speculation will only grow louder.

McDavid’s Future Focus

At 28 years old, McDavid knows this next contract could define the remainder of his prime years. He’s made it clear that family and long-term priorities will guide his decision.

“Ultimately, I still need to do what’s best for me and my family,” McDavid said.

His comments suggest that loyalty to Edmonton will be balanced by a desire for personal fulfillment, whether that means chasing a championship, living closer to home, or starting a new chapter elsewhere.

For now, everything remains hypothetical. But if McDavid does hit the open market, Toronto might just make the boldest play of all.
