The Yankees' tailspin of a summer continued with a demoralizing sweep in Miami by the suddenly hot and hungry Marlins, who rode the momentum of a 13-12 Friday thriller to their first sweep of the Yankees in franchise history. Of course, the Yankees came in with the expectation that new acquisitions David Bednar, Camilo Doval, Jake Bird and Jose Caballero would provide a much-needed spark to a sloppy lineup whose fundamentals are lacking. The sloppiness of this team continued on Sunday, as Jazz Chisholm Jr was embarrassingly doubled up at first base on a routine pop up, with Chisholm expecting the fly to be purposefully dropped by Marlins second baseman Xavier Edwards, who caught it and fired behind Chisholm.

Unfortunately, all four of those newcomers struggled in their debuts with the Yankees, with Bednar, Bird and Doval giving up a combined nine earned runs in just 2 1/3 innings.
Yankees manager Aaron Boone, who has been increasingly questioned for his seeming lack of accountability, both public and private, did not exactly respond the way fans would have liked.
Fans might've liked Boone to bench Chisholm for his mental lapse, of which there has not been a satiating explanation. Chisholm, when asked by the press, responded, "Sometimes you get aggressive and you make an out," while saying he would not have done things differently if given the chance again.
Boone was seen yelling at first base coach Travis Chapman, and Boone told the media that the blame lied on Chapman for not yelling at Chisholm to get back as Edwards settled under the pop up.
“The only thing I was saying was, ‘Could we have yelled louder when he gets into the danger zone?’” Boone said.
The increasing perception appears to be that the players like Chisholm and Anthony Volpe are not concerned with being held accountable for poor play and mental lapses, and Boone has never been the kind of manager to publicly hold his players to account, especially in his discussions with the media.
Longtime Yankees pitcher Joba Chamberlain, who experienced the managership of Joe Girardi and Joe Torre, responded to a fan on X that either manager would have responded "Differently" to the Yankees' recent sloppy play.
Speaking of different managers, fans across the league are starting to chime in on Boone's perceived ineffectuality, with a Tigers fan weighing in on the Chisholm Jr situation by pointing out that Javier Baez was benched by manager AJ Hinch in 2023 after a similar baserunning blunder.
A lot of talk about Jazz Chisholm Jr. and accountability.

Thank God AJ Hinch is my manager.

Baez, who hit to an anemic .221/.262/.347 slashline during his first three years with the Tigers, was named the starting center fielder in the 2025 All-Star Game and hit to a productive .285/.323/.460 slash line from March to June.
Baez was known early on in his Tigers tenure as an undisciplined hitter and poor performer, with Tigers fans booing Baez even when there wasn't much important baseball being played in Motown.
One fan replied to the tweet about Baez, saying: "{Hinch is} a real manager. A very good manager. One of the reasons I predicted the Tigers to win the World Series a couple days ago."
Obviously, the tweet was controversial with fans remembering the Astros' 2017 cheating scandal which cost Hinch his job - an example that directly undermines the veteran manager's credibility and agenda on holding players accountable.
Ultimately, though, the example about Baez going from undisciplined to one of the reasons the Tigers are as successful as they are in 2025 could be important in the discussion over Boone's controversial handling of Chisholm's mental mistake.
The bottom line is, fans argue, what is there to play for if your playing time isn't at stake?
