Mavericks make Kyrie Irving announcement on Sunday

The Mavs and the former first overall pick did a little business Sunday afternoon.

Kyrie Irving

Good news, Dallas Mavericks fans.

Kyrie Irving isn't going anywhere anytime soon.

The team announced Sunday afternoon that they had reached an agreement with the former Duke Blue Devil guard and have re-signed him to a new deal.

The details on the deal are pending but knowing that they'll still have Kyrie to pair with fellow number one overall picks in Cooper Flagg and Anthony Davis has to give the team a silver lining after a heartbreaking and confusing 2024 season.

Just a month after possibly the most shocking trade of the 21st century that brought Anthony Davis to the Mavericks, Irving would suffer a season-ending torn ACL, leaving him on the shelf until likely the middle of this upcoming season.

And even after controversies on and off the court with his previous teams, especially Boston and Brooklyn, Irving has been nothing but a positive for the Mavericks since he was traded to Dallas in February 2023.

Since then, he has regularly averaged 25 points per game with the Mavs and led them to the NBA Finals in the 2023-24 season, losing in five games to the Boston Celtics.

In his 14 professional seasons, Irving is a nine-time NBA All-Star, winning the All-Star Game MVP in 2014, was named the NBA Rookie of the Year after a successful 2011-12 season, and, alongside LeBron James and Kevin Love, led the Cleveland Cavaliers to their first NBA championship after erasing a 3-1 deficit against the Golden State Warriors in 2016, and first championship for the city of Cleveland in 52 years to that point.

And now the city of Dallas will be looking for their team to win their first championship since 2011 as Cooper Flagg adjusts to professional play and Irving continues to nurse his ACL.
