Second baseman Gleyber Torres is in his eighth major-league season and first with the Detroit Tigers after signing a one-year deal this past offseason.

Torres began his professional career when the Chicago Cubs signed him as a 16-year-old amateur free agent in 2013. In July 2016, he was packaged among four prospects sent to the New York Yankees in exchange for flamethrowing closer Aroldis Chapman, a deal that reshaped both organizations.

After his 2018 promotion, Torres immediately asserted himself among baseball’s rising stars—earning All-Star appearances in each of his first two years in MLB.

But after a disappointing 2024 season—underscored by a league-high 18 errors at his position and lackluster postseason production—the Yankees decided to let him walk in free agency.

On Saturday against the Cleveland Guardians, Torres slid into second base and took a blow to the head from shortstop Brayan Rocchio’s elbow, forcing him to exit the game.

In Sunday’s series finale, he was held out of Detroit’s starting lineup but said in pregame that after experiencing neck soreness the night before, he feels fine and will be available off the bench.

That’s reassuring news for Detroit, where Torres has recaptured his early-career form. On Wednesday, he earned his third All-Star selection—his first since 2019—and remains a key top-of-the-order presence on the American League’s best team, which sits at 56–34.

He isn’t the only Tiger experiencing a career resurgence—Javier Báez also secured his first All-Star selection since 2019.

Through 77 games this season, Torres is batting .279 with an .811 OPS, with nine home runs and 44 RBIs.
