EL PASO, Texas (KTSM) – New Mexico State football’s defense enters its second year under the direction of defensive coordinator, Joe Morris.

In year one with the program, Morris’ defense gave up 446 yards and an average of 36 points per game. In 2024, only four players returned to its defensive front from the season prior.

Headed into 2025, Morris’ entire defensive staff remains intact from last year adding consistency to the program in addition to returning key players such as linebacker Tyler Martinez and cornerback Dakerric Hobbs.

This consistency has allowed the defense to find its identity within Morris’ system in year two – as it focuses on four main aspects of the game to find success this upcoming season.

“We want to be really good in four areas. Rush defense, we want to be really good on third down, we want to do a good job in the red zone, and we want to create takeaways.” Morris said.

Martinez is one of two players from the Aggies defense to earn a spot on the 2025 Conference USA Preseason Watch List. He was accompanied by defensive back Gabe Peterson who returns to Las Cruces after playing for NMSU in 2022 and 2023, before transferring to Utah State in 2024.

“This year, I just want to win. I want to go out on top and be part of the winning team all the time. I think we’re in a great spot right now. We came out fast, and the defense is communicating really well.” Martinez said.

The pair are expected to have a big role for NMSU starting August 30th at home versus Bryant.
