The Los Angeles Lakers made headlines this weekend by locking in Luka Doncic to a three-year, $165 million extension. The deal, which includes a player option for the 2028–29 season, effectively solidifies Doncic as the new face of the franchise. It also marks a significant turning point that signals the transition from the LeBron James era to the next phase of Lakers basketball.
Doncic’s arrival and now his contract extension have been two of the defining storylines of the Lakers’ summer. After the news broke, Doncic and Lakers General Manager Rob Pelinka addressed the press on Saturday, with fellow teammates also in attendance, including new signings Marcus Smart and Deandre Ayton. However, James and his son Bronny were noticeably absent, leading to increased speculation about the franchise’s relationship with the superstar forward.
LeBron James' Reaction to Luka Doncic News Revealed
While the reason for James’ absence remains unknown to the public, NBA insider Marc Stein gave some insight on the four-time MVP’s posture towards Doncic’s new deal:
“LeBron and son Bronny James were noticeably not in attendance at the news conference, but I’m told that LeBron FaceTimed Doncic on Saturday morning to congratulate him on the new deal.”

This comes after weeks of reported tension between James and the Lakers. According to ESPN’s Ramona Shelburne and Brian Windhorst, the four-time MVP was said to be displeased with how some decisions were handled during the Lakers’ transition to the Doncic era—including contract talks and public messaging around the team’s direction.
Still, James’ latest gesture appears to dispel any speculation about his relationship with Doncic. The move could also be a great step toward maintaining locker room chemistry as the team prepares for the 2025-26 season with both Doncic and James set to share the court for the first full year.
Lakers Fans Upset About LeBron James' Absence on Saturday
Prior to Stein’s report, James faced heavy scrutiny from Lakers fans for refusing to attend Doncic’s press conference as many took to social media to air their displeasure:
“Ofc Bron doesn’t attend,” one fan wrote.
“Bron is still at the Clippers facility, I see” a fan said.
“No picture has ever spoken louder. Know what I mean? I doubt he comes back, another fan added.
“LoL no Bron ?!?!?! This speaks volumes,” another fan remarked.
LeBron James’ Lakers Future Still Up in the Air
While Doncic is now under contract through 2029, James has yet to commit beyond this season. Per ESPN's Dave McMenamin, there were no talks about an extension offer from the Lakers, a move that ultimately culminated in James picking up his $52.6 million player option for the 2025-26 season.
As it stands, James will become a free agent next summer, potentially bringing his Lakers chapter to a close after eight seasons. It also remains to be seen if he would end his NBA career after next season with retirement also potentially on the table.
