Red Sox trade idea lands All-Star pitcher in 2026

The Boston Red Sox need to add to their starting rotation, and one All-Star could be traded to the Red Sox next winter.

Heading into the Major League Baseball trade deadline, there was a handful of speculations that the Boston Red Sox would trade for Minnesota Twins starting pitcher Joe Ryan.

The Red Sox never pulled the trade-off for Ryan and instead traded for Los Angeles Dodgers pitcher Dustin May. Ryan would've given the Red Sox a boost the pitching staff needed.

Even though Ryan wasn't acquired by Boston this season, there is still a chance the Red Sox could revisit trade talks this offseason.

The Twins pitcher still has two more years left of control, meaning he will be a free agent in 2028.

Rick McNair from Fansided thinks the Red Sox might consider adding Ryan this offseason.

"The Twins were fully engaged in a house cleaning, and one dust bunny remained — Joe Ryan. Righty Ryan has the perfect resume for Boston with the noted statistical accomplishments one would expect, along with a controllable contract. The negotiations were not successful, but the parties will resume discussions. The Red Sox have failed once, and a second failure will not float well with RSN," McNair wrote. "Now circle back to Ryan, who, with Framber Valdez, could present Boston with a baseball version of Sophie's Choice. Ryan would cost the Red Sox nearly as much as Crochet, possibly a big league outfielder, and two top prospects. The Twins asked for Jarren Duran or Wilyer Abreu as the centerpiece of the deal in their recent deadline discussions, which the Red Sox declined."

Ryan made his first All-Star game this season with a 2.83 ERA. With the Twins selling off most of their roster at the deadline, the team could look to move Ryan this winter.
