The Boston Red Sox made two moves at the trade deadline, acquiring starter Dustin May and swingman Steven Matz.
Yet, many Red Sox fans wanted more, especially on the pitching end. Just recently, it was announced that Tanner Houck and Liam Hendricks would be done for the season, so Boston could use more depth.
With that, Major League Baseball analyst Mike Rosenstein of NESN links the Red Sox to a reunion with veteran left-hander Rich Hill.
“But with the MLB trade deadline in the rearview mirror, a contending club which loses a starting pitcher down the stretch could be giving Hill a call,” Rosenstein wrote. “That includes the Red Sox, with whom Hill has already had four stints. He played for Boston from 2010-12, 2015, 2022, and 2024. Last year with the Red Sox, Hill made four appearances and went 0-1 with a 4.91 ERA.”

Hill was DFA’d by the Kansas City Royals in and he chose to become a free agent. The 45-year-old went 0-2 with a 5.00 ERA in two starts over nine innings.
MLB Trade Rumors analyst Nick Deeds, meanwhile, said the two starts were lackluster and Hill is nothing more than an innings eater right now.
“It was a lackluster pair of outings for the veteran, and he’s served as more of an innings-eating depth starter as he’s entered his mid-40s with a 5.38 ERA over 159 innings of work since the start of the 2023 campaign,” Deeds wrote.
But if another Red Sox pitcher goes down, perhaps Hill would be open to a reunion to eat some innings down the stretch and help Boston get into the playoffs.
