Bruno Fernandes hit out at Manchester United’s “lazy” performance against Everton on Sunday as he called on the club to complete more signings in the transfer window.
The Red Devils were held to a 2-2 draw in the final game of the Premier League Summer Series in the United States. Fernandes opened the scoring from the penalty spot, which was cancelled out by an emphatic finish from Iliman Ndiaye.
Mason Mount came off the bench to equalise before Man Utd conceded a comical own goal as Amad Diallo’s attempted clearance struck Ayden Heaven and went into the net. The equaliser happened while Fernandes was scrapping with Ndiaye, for which both players received a booking.
Following wins over West Ham United and Bournemouth, the United captain was pleased overall with the tour but disappointed by how it ended.
“It’s been positive,” Fernandes said. “It’s been positive to be together to create a bond between the players.
“It’s been important for developing how we want to play and getting the new players involved too.
“We didn’t want to finish in this way,” he added. “Our performance wasn’t the best and we were a little bit lazy today.
“We want to avoid that because with laziness you can pay at any moment.”
Bryan Mbeumo performed well on debut following his £71m move from Brentford, combining well with Fernandes and fellow new signing Matheus Cunha. But Fernandes believes even more new additions are needed ahead of the new season.
“It’s improving,” he said. “But it’s not the place it needs to be. I don’t want to take a dig at anyone but the club is doing the best they can in terms of the financial situation they talk about.
“But it was crystal clear we needed more competition for the players that were here, more quality to get everyone to step up a little more to get to the XI, and I think that is what the club are trying to do.
“Hopefully we can get one or two players more to help with that.”
