OGDEN, Utah (ABC4 Sports) – The locals played well, but in the end, Julian Suri was the hottest golfer on the course.
Suri fired a final round 63 on his way to his first career Korn Ferry Tour victory, winning the Utah Championship by two strokes at Ogden Country Club Sunday afternoon.
Suri finished at 18-under par, two shots better than five golfers. Trace Crowe, Kensei Hirata, Taylor Montgomery, Barend Botha and Spencer Levin all finished at 16-under.
“You can look at the leaderboard and get wrapped up in all the stuff going on in the moment,” Suri said. “But that doesn’t change what you have to do. You’ve got to keep executing, and I was able to do that.”
Farmington native Preston Summerhays, a recent graduate of Arizona State, was the top local finisher at 15-under par. Summerhays shot a 65 in Sunday’s final round for his second top-10 finish in seven starts on the Korn Ferry Tour.
Former BYU stars Danny Summerhays, Peter Kuest and Cole Ponich all finished at 12-under for the tournament, tied for 22nd place.
Suri started the final round five shots back of the lead, but stormed to the front with eight birdies on the day. Suri birdied 13, 14 and 15 to take the lead for good. He finished the tournament with a birdie on 18.
“I feel like in terms of experience, I have a little bit more than some of these guys,” said the 34-year-old Suri. “But at the end of the day, you just have to hit the shots. You have to get yourself into that place that where you’ve hit a million of these balls on the range and try to get as close to that spot as possible.”
The Utah Championship was Suri’s 39th start on the Korn Ferry Tour and his first career tournament victory.
