Former Yankees star backs Astros adding .264 hitter for one key reason

Former New York Yankees star backs the Houston Astros' move to add a .264 hitter, citing one key reason.

Before last Thursday’s MLB trade deadline, the Houston Astros brought back a familiar face. In a move that’s basically a salary dump, the Minnesota Twins sent Carlos Correa back to Houston while agreeing to cover just $33 million of the $104 million still owed to Correa through 2028, per ESPN.

Moreover, the Astros hope that this move back to a familiar city and organization can spark him to rediscover his past form as he’s struggled this season, batting .264 with seven home runs and 31 RBIs. These aren’t terrible numbers, but they’re not the standard many would expect from Correa.

On Saturday, former New York Yankees third baseman and MLB analyst on FOX, Alex Rodriguez, noted that while it’s been a challenging 2025 season for the infielder, that can all be forgotten in the postseason.

“He had a hard no-trade clause,” Rodriguez said during the MLB on FOX broadcast. “And he told his Minnesota team, the Twins, that he would only go to one team. He wanted to get reunited with his world champion teammates. Look, I know he’s a little bit older, but he’s a big-time player, he’s got big guts, and he knows exactly what to do in October.”

Before leaving Houston after the 2021 MLB season, Correa spent seven years with the Astros, where they won the 2017 World Series.

Furthermore, Rodriguez is correct, the 30-year-old does find a new form when October rolls around. Correa has been to the postseason seven times in his career, batting .282 with 18 home runs and 63 RBIs in 85 games.

Perhaps the Astros can be patient with Correa to find his footing again and adapt to playing third base because they know when the lights are the brightest, he’s a player who doesn’t shy away from the spotlight and will come through with a clutch at-bat for them.
