A tough blow for the Mariners relief pitcher.

The Seattle Mariners are widely considered among the winners of the 2025 MLB trade deadline. They made a particularly loud noise on Wednesday, when they successfully reunited with star third baseman Eugenio Suarez via a trade with the Arizona Diamondbacks without parting ways with high-quality assets. The D-Backs also acquired first baseman Tyler Locklear along with minor-league pitchers Hunter Cranton and Juan Burgos.

Adding excitement to the trade success, they had a 6-0 victory in the series opener against the Texas Rangers at T-Mobile Park in Seattle, Thursday night.

But it was not all roses and sunshine for the Mariners of late. In the same game, Seattle relief pitcher Trent Thornton went down with an apparent lower-body injury and had to be carted off the field in the ninth inning, according to Adam Jude of the Seattle Times.

"Trent Thornton has injured his lower left leg while trying to hustle to first base here with two outs in the ninth inning. Tough scene," wrote Jude in a post on X.

Meanwhile, Daniel Kramer of MLB.com reported that Seattle "fears" that Thornton suffered an Achilles injury, but more should be known after a scheduled MRI this Friday.

Before he left the contest, Thornton pitched for 1 2/3 innings with two strikeouts. He was just an out away from shutting the door on the Rangers when he sustained the painful injury.

Trent Thornton’s 2025 MLB season with the Mariners

The 31-year-old Thornton is in his third season playing for the Mariners, who signed him to a one-year, $2 million contract in 2024 to avoid arbitration. He signed a similar contract in 2025 January as well, for a $2 million deal.

It will be unfortunate if his injury turns out to be serious enough to keep him out for the rest of the 2025 season, as he is due to become a free agent in the offseason.

Through 33 appearances so far in 2025, Thornton has put up a 4.68 ERA and a 1.30 WHIP across 42.1 innings.

Apart from the hard-hitting Suarez, the Mariners also traded for first baseman Josh Naylor last week from the Arizona Diamondbacks. They also added a pitcher via a trade for southpaw Caleb Ferguson from the Pirates.

Suarez made his impact felt right away in his return to Seattle, as he scored the first run of the game against the Rangers. Cal Raleigh and Cole Young both homered to provide ample run support for the Mariners' pitching, which got a sterling performance from George Kirby. The right-hander improved to 6-5 after holding Texas scoreless for six innings.
