The Houston Astros are expected to be active as the MLB trade deadline nears, but one top target could be slipping out of their reach.
ESPN's Jeff Passan reported on Wednesday that the Astros have expressed interest in bringing back former star Correa, but haven't made much progress in talks with the Minnesota Twins.
"While the Houston Astros have interest in Minnesota Twins shortstop Carlos Correa and there has been dialogue on a potential trade, the sides are far apart at the moment and no deal is close, sources tell ESPN," Passan reported.
Correa started his career with the Astros, the No. 1 pick in the 2012 MLB Draft, then grew into a star and led the team to a World Series title in 2017. The Astros have been interested in a reunion to help their injury-struck infield, with third baseman Isaac Paredes out for a significant stretch with a strained right hamstring.
As MLB.com's Brian McTaggart added, Correa could have given a boost to Houston's title hopes this season.
"A reunion with Correa would provide a jolt for an Astros team that’s struggled offensively in July and maintains a tenuous four-game lead in the AL West over the Mariners," McTaggart wrote. "The Astros have been without slugger Yordan Alvarez (hand) for most of the season, and center fielder Jake Meyers has missed three weeks with a right calf strain. Correa remains close to some of his former teammates, including Jose Altuve."
